How useful is the concept of genre in understanding your work?
Genre plays an important role in helping you understand the conventions that are required of your own product. I have used genre very successfully throughout my foundation and advanced portfolios to inform my own work. It was essential that I realised the conventions of the genres so that I could successfully emulate them. The media theorist Richard Maltby said that success relies on predictable elements with slight variation, which is why initially I chose to meet the conventions as closely as possible. However, Rick Altman believes that this type of comforism takes away the artistic licence of the artist.
