Today, we studied media theorists and explored some of their theories. Discussed were some of the theories that were founded by the likes of John Fiske, Edward Buscombe, Richard Maltby/Ian Craven and Rick Altman. Is genre timeless? No it's open to historial change, sub-genres are always emerging.
John Fiske Theory
I believe John Fiske's theory is possibly one of the most influencial on Deanna and I's project. Fiske teaches the theory that "any one programme will bear the main characteristics of its genre". Which I believe to be true of ours, mainly fitting into the female solo artist genre. However, just as Fiske says "it's likely to include some [characteristics] from others". Namely for our project, the indie and pop sub-genres are heavily influencial.
Richard Maltby and Ian Craven
Maltby and Craven believe that the success of Hollywood relies solely on the combination of predictable elements with some variation. It is thought that audiences like the predictability of Hollywood films, and it is a comfort to them.
Edward Buscombe
Buscombe held the belief that iconography was the best way to achieve generic definitions.
Rick Altman
It is thought that since we have been placing media texts in to genre categories, that we have began to pre-read texts, already forming an opinion about what we are reading. This makes readers become passive voyeurs. Genres are therefore restrictive and don't allow for hybrids or genres to blend.
